The “BEAMS engine” in the Toyota MR2 (SW20) refers to the engine installed in the naturally aspirated (NA) “G” and “G Limited” models during the facelift (commonly known as theV-type) carried out in December 1997.

‘BEAMS’ stands for “Breakthrough Engine with Advanced Mechanism System” and is the name given to a series of high-performance engines incorporating new technologies.

• Adoption of VVT-i: The engine is newly equipped with a Continuously Variable Valve Timing system (VVT-i) to optimize intake and exhaust efficiency.

• Increased Power Output: Power has been significantly boosted from the 180 PS of previous NA models (Type IV and earlier) to 200 PS (torque: 21.0 kg·m).

• Commonly known as the “Red Head”: Characterized by its red-painted cylinder head cover, it is affectionately known as the “Red Head” among fans.

• Rarity: Since it was only installed for just under two years—immediately before the MR2’s production ended (1997–1999)—it is an extremely rare model on the used car market.
